The Romanian off-road vehicle company ARO (short for Auto Romania) was based in Câmpulung. The first ARO vehicle was built in 1957, and the final one was built in 2003. Daihatsu-powered AROs were sold in Spain and manufactured in Portugal for a brief time under the labels Hispano and Portaro, respectively. Low-volume manufacture of ARO cars has resumed under the direction of Auto Max Czech, a Czech firm (AMC).
The first factory in Câmpulung was erected in 1942, under instructions from Marshal Ion Antonescu, during World War II. As an expansion of Romanian aircraft manufacturer IAR, the facility was originally intended to produce aircrews. This facility served as the headquarters for ARO after the war.
