A team of engineers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched Lenovo as Legend on November 1, 1984 in Beijing. Initially focusing on televisions, the firm shifted its focus to computer production and distribution. Lenovo rose to become China’s market leader, raising roughly $30 million in an initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Lenovo has expanded from the personal computer industry and made a number of corporate acquisitions throughout the 1990s, the most noteworthy of which was purchasing and merging much of IBM’s personal computer and x86-based server businesses, as well as developing its own smartphone.
